The Sycamore School

THE SYCAMORE SCHOOL

Catalyst is currently in the process of founding the Sycamore School.  After many years spent "de-institutionalizing" middle school students, we look to preserve the natural curiosity and creativity found in young children.  An independent elementary school featuring a curriculum rooted in collaboration, innovation, and learning through play, Sycamore opens in Malibu on September 1, 2015.  Its three founders, Tedd Wakeman, AJ Webster, and Christy Durham, comprise the leadership team at Sycamore, bringing passion, experience, and their distinctive vision for learning to this beautiful campus.

At The Sycamore School, every student deserves an education that prepares her for the needs of her individual future, not for our collective past. This goal intentionally encompasses what have come to be known as 21st Century skills: creativity, curiosity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) competencies are nurtured as an outgrowth of our future focused approach. Students must be challenged and empowered to be builders of their futures. We provide an environment that encourages agency in their learning...

THE PLAYMAKER SCHOOL

Launched in 2012, the PlayMaker School was a revolutionary step in education designed to prepare students for 21st century success. The school was founded upon the principle that kids should be empowered to create meaningful relationships with knowledge through observation, relevant interaction with their environment, play, and making. The two year program was originally conceived through a partnership with GameDesk, Joe Wise (Wildwood School), and the founders of Catalyst.  PlayMaker gained notoriety for its unique approach to 21st century learning and its game-based curriculum.  Receiving national and global attention for its innovative approach, the school was featured on the PBS News Hour in 2014.
